I'm taking the plunge; 100 Day Challenge.

I'm sure most have you have noticed the 100 day challenge making its way around the blogesphere. The lovely Sophia over at Tattooed Tealady is into her final week and has really inspired me to give it a go! So here I am, preparing for my 100 day challenge.

For those that don't know basically, it's a spending ban. The rules are tailored to your needs and what you spend most of your money on. Obviously there has to be some exceptions like bills etc. but I think that goes without saying.

I know some of you will be like 'why on earth would you want to ban yourself from spending?', but I have my reasons. As from 12th September I will be a full time student, with a measly NHS bursary and a pittance of student loan (mainly because I've already received a loan previously). So my budget is going to be tight, and by that I mean I literally can't spend so I can afford to get to/from uni and eat! Also, I am going away at Christmas to Berlin and literally will want to buy EVERYTHING so this is a good excuse to save!

So here are my rules;

1. No buying clothes, bags, jewellery or shoes - online or physically. There are a few exceptions though, if the weather gets really cold, I am allowed to buy a Winter coat and a jumper. This is cos I get the train/walk to uni.
2. I am allowed 2 magazines a month (this is a huge improvement), to stop me going insane.
3. Money can be spent on; bills, rent, stamps, food/drink (only for the house or to take to for lunch), travelling expenses, exercise and anything related to uni.
4. No buying toiletries or make up - unless of course I run completely out (and I mean completely!).
6. I am allowed on night out (with friends) a month - with a budget, if this means drinking tap water, so be it.
5. Lastly I can buy Birthday and Christmas presents.

I'm doing this in the hope that I will be able to start managing my money better and prove to everyone I can actually live off a budget.

My 100 days challenge starts on Monday - 3rd September 2012 and finishes in 100 days time - 9th December 2012, just in time for my trip to Berlin! Yes, there is a reason I don't start till Monday is that is my first loan payment plus it's my leaving do at work this evening and I need to pay for a meal!

I will update each week with how my spending ban is going! Wish me luck!

  4. I'm currently on a spending ban because of uni too! I've also worked out how much money I have to spend each week from what my loan gives me and I've decided that I'm going to be taking that amount of money out my bank each week and banning myself from using my card to pay for stuff. Hopefully that'll help me!

    Good luck with it :)

  9. Good luck. Something I do on night's out is for pre-drinks at a flat I bring a £5 bottle of wine (I can drink cheap pinot grigio) then don't drink when we get to the club. Plus me and my friend's love the £4 entry fee at our fav venue!
