When I was asked by Travelodge to 'Flaunt my Haunt' and share my favourite place in Manchester, I didn't have to think twice. Without a doubt, spending time in the Northern Quarter is easily my favourite thing to do. If you've ever been to Manchester you'll probably be aware that the NQ is one of the 'coolest' hang-outs in the city. There is so many quirky bars, cafes and shops that you can easily get lost for hours.
So where do I recommend to eat? Dough. Dough is THE most amazing pizza place ever. Not only do they offer crazy pizza toppings, but they also cater for gluten and dairy free diets. If I'm ever craving a delicious food away from the fast-food chains, I always head to Dough.
If it's bars you're looking for, you've certainly come to the right place. In fact, just across from Dough is Walrus, a really cool bar that offer a big drinks menu and lots of cocktails. Walrus is a great place to pop in after work or if you're wanting something a little more intimate than Hard Rock Cafe.
Another of my recent bar/restaurant finds is Allotment. Slightly further into the NQ, close to Affleck's Palace is this cute garden-style bar. The decor is, as the name would suggest, 'outdoorsy' with lots of plants, shed-like structures and garden benches. I love being in the city centre and suddenly feeling as if you've been transported somewhere else. This is a great place for hanging out with friends and getting a few nibbles.
I've already mentioned Affleck's Palace, but for those who aren't aware Affleck's is a mixture of everything - that's the only way to describe it. Inside the large building is small shops, ranging from clothes and food to tattoo and piercing studios. It certainly is something unique to Manchester, but it is pretty fun wandering around and getting lost in the shops.
Affleck's is surrounded by amazing vintage stores and cool charity shops. If you're looking for something 'not on the highstreet' you'll probably find it in the NQ.
My latest find is a vegan restaurant and shop called V Revolution. This is a little further out from the other bars, on Oldham Street, but it's totally worth the journey. The menu offers lots of vegan goodies from burgers and hot dogs to cheese toasties, but my favourite thing is the vegan food on sale. It's pretty hard to get hold of nice dairy free chocolate, but V Revolution have everything covered. I first discovered Vego bars from their store and I am now completely obsessed - they actually taste like milk chocolate! Anyway, if you're looking for something alternative to eat, definitely check out this place.
To be honest, I could continue raving about the NQ for the next week, so I think I will leave it like this. If you're new to Manchester or have been living here a while, go explore the NQ, I guarantee you'll find something new every time.
